Young Chef & Big Society Update from RIBI

Hello everyone

Rotary Young Chef

Rotary Young Chef will kick off at a local level in September when the schools are back and the plans for the RIBI Final are already well in progress. Artwork for fliers and posters is being produced and will be downloadable and some hardcopy will be available.

I am pleased to announce that Filippo Berio are fully supporting us again this year and through them we have also secured the support of Delicious magazine. They are going to offer additional promotion and this has started with an excellent article on their own website. Click the link below to view it. This will almost certainly come to the attention of teachers and parents and at a club level open up new opportunities for working with schools.

Please continue to spread the word.  I’d like to thank our colleagues at Filippo Berio for their wonderful support and enthusiasm.

Big Society

You cannot have failed to hear about the Prime Ministers ideas on the Big Society and how it is hoping to train and enlist the young people of the UK to build a better society. I want you to know that Rotary Youth Opportunities have not been slow in responding  via a press release  to the major daily titles and letters positioning Rotary as a potential partner in the provision of leadership training and personal development opportunities for young people. RYLA, Interact, Young Citizen, Young technologist, the competitions all link into the needs that the PM sees as the growing needs of young people.

We’ll keep you posted. I know you will all be interested in this information, but if any of you have changed your district responsibilities and are no longer the DYO, then please let me know and provide the new officer details.

Yours in Rotary

Denis Spiller

Rotary in London and London Olympics 2012

It’s now only two years to go to the London 2012 Olympics.  No doubt many of you are wondering what Rotary inLondon plans to do to celebrate these games.

We have already established an Olympics team and have met with the Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Tom Travers at the London Development Agency who is leading the Host Volunteering Programme on his behalf.

We have accepted the invitation from LOCOG, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games, to be part of the group of community and voluntary organisations who will be working with them.

In addition, we have spoken to Sir Robin Wales, the Executive Mayor of Newham, who is leading for the five East London boroughs where most of the London events will take place.

Additionally, all 29 District Governors for the Olympics year (2012-13) have decided to link up to coordinate activities for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, particularly the DGNs in the eight Districts in and aroundLondon,

So far, plans include opening Rotary in London headquarters at York Gate to offer hospitality to visiting Rotarians, teams of Rotarians to welcome visitors at airports and key rail stations, etc., organising functions and community events.

We will keep you informed of developments as plans progress.

We would like to hear from Rotarians in the District who are keen to be involved in Rotary’s celebration of the Games.

Please contact: Clive Amos, District Olympics Chairman (details in District Directory) or Eve Conway, District Governor Nominee (2012-13) (details in District Directory)

Pitch your project at District Conference

An innovation at conference this year, during the question and answer session on Saturday afternoon, is a short ‘pitching’ session.  If your club has an exciting & original new project that could use input from other clubs, let the conference committee know the proposal via Conference Chairman Wally K Daly (details in District Directory) and five clubs will be invited to make a four minute pitch on stage, not unlike an exciting commercial, ending by asking any club interested to contact their club in the week after conference. Because of time constraints only five will be picked, and no questions will be taken after the pitch – but if the idea proves to ‘Have legs’ it will also feature in the following years conference at a greater length.

Host required for Ambassadorial Scholar

I would be grateful to receive an offer from a club to host a young lady from Nigeria but who has been studying in the States.  Her name is Mofeyisayo Ayodele and she arrives in September to attend the LSE to study International Development/International Law.  The main commitment of a Club to act as a Host is to provide someone within the club to act as Host Counsellor, rather like a mentor, to be there for the student and answer any questions they may have so that they have a friend as soon as they arrive in the country.  The club would invite the scholar to speak to them and attend whenever convenient.  The financial implication is a cost of about £150 in total as arrangements have to be made for the scholar to attend Conference in October and pay for one night’s accommodation (one night’s costs being reimbursed by District)  Most volunteer clubs find it a rewarding experience to get to know their scholar and this often results in a lifelong friendship.
