Foundation Grant Partner – Florianopolis, Brazil

DISTRIC 4651
FLORIANÓPOLIS ILHA ROTARY CLUB
Dear Mr. President,
We are sending you the “Projeto de Subsídio Global” (Global Allowance Project): “Modernizando Espaço para Crianças e Adolescentes” (Improving space for children and adolescents), so that your District and Club can take a look and analyze the possibilities of being our partner together with your District. Our goal is to assist 660 children at the ages of 6 months to 18 years, that come from poor families of Florianópolis’ suburbs.
It will allow the 300 minors’ parents to go to work, while their kids are at the Daycare. To the older ones, it will provide them the opportunity to learn new jobs, which is a way to keep them busy and away from bad companies.
We inform you that we already have one partner in this project, from Portugal, District 1970, which will participate with an amount of US$ 3.500, while our District will also participate with a US$ 3.300 contribution. Nevertheless, we still need to gather US$ 19.614,50.
We would be very honored and thankful if we could count on this partnership to develop our Project.  We look forward for your answer.
Best wishes,

LOCATION OF THE PROJECT  Escola Municipal João Barbalho : Rua Aureliano Lessa , s/n  Ramos , Rio de janeiro  . Brazil

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

The school encompasses Junior High students – 6th through 9th grades – from 4 underprivileged communities: Morro do Adeus, Morro da Baiana, Morro da Alvorada and Morro do Alemao, that are part of the slum area known as Complexo do Alemao.

The lab room lacks equipment; therefore, in spite of their good-will, the teachers, highly capacitated, cannot develop any kind of work whatsoever.

The students live within a destitute community, lacking qualified attractions, a situation that may lead them to hazardous paths.

By awakening their interest in Science, mainly Chemistry, the project can help the kids in their formation, keeping them out of the streets and offering, instead, the opportunity to pursue concrete objectives, thus building up a dignified and conscientious citizenship.

Actually, the community has been engaged, for long, in a persistent effort to make this dream come true, so they will most certainly be deeply grateful to Rotary once they finally achieve their goal.

The project fits in the criteria of the Future Vision Plan since it will have a long-term continuity.

Bearing in mind the importance of the Image of Rotary, there will be a banner at the school doorway identifying the lab as a Rotary project.

By the end of the course, Rotary will also provide certificates for all.

Foundation Grant Partner – Hospital in Uganda

Hi.

I’ve just had a long phone call with a retired GP from Henley Bridge Rotary Club, Jim McWhirter, who is wanting to get a global grant going to support a hospital in Uganda with which he is closely aligned.  For some detailed information see the link at http://friendsofkamulimissionhospital.org/index.htm.  As his district, 1090, is not a pilot he is looking for one of us to help.  He has a very good sounding project, he has the cash (it would be largely club-funded, with only a small amount of 1090’s DDF going in, I understand), and seems to fit all the global grant criteria.

He is looking for a district that might be willing to take this on, which would also mean finding a club within that district that would be willing to work with RC Henley Bridge in applying for said grant.  I’ll be asking around my own district, but one of you may want to open the opportunity up to one of your clubs instead.  We (1070) have just had a global grant awarded to us on behalf of RC Trent Bridge (district 1220) for some boreholes in Uganda.  So we’ve been there, done that, and happy to give someone else a go.

Let me know by the 8th March please (I’m away for much of the time until then), so I can get back to Jim with any news.

Regards,

John

Global Grant Proposal: Milk Bank in Sao Paulo, Brazil

PROPOSAL to support MILK BANK in Sao Paulo

As part of a Future Vision pilot district, 4610 in São Paulo, Rotary Osasco Quitauna in Brazil looks for an international partner to expand the activities of Maternity Amador Aguiar’s Milk Bank. Under the current conditions it does not meet all the necessities of the public since the Bank requires highly specialized human resources capable of handling this life-and-death job, appropriate physical space furnished with freezers, refrigerators, industrial grade pasteurization equipment, and kitchen-gas to process the milk; and at the front door, a monitoring center to process donors and collected milk along with further informational duties on breast-feeding. Rotary was responsible for the inauguration of the Milk Bank ten years ago and now needs help to continue serving newborns from a two million population pool. The budget of the project is $30,000 of which each club will be responsible for $7,500 and the Rotary Foundation will provide the rest of the funds. Please contact us for more information and become a partner in this life saving endeavor.
