More than 200 local competitions have been taking place across Great Britain and Ireland, with thousands of young people taking part.
Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland’s (RIBI) Young Chef was created to give young people the chance to display their creative talents with food, while discovering the importance of healthy eating.
Shirley Kirk, Rotary in London Youth Opportunities Chairman, said: “Young Chef is aimed at anyone who enjoys cooking or who wants to have a go; it’s not just for experienced young cooks. It could be a stepping stone to a career in the food industry, but this is not the main aim of the competition – it is simply a good way for young people to have fun learning an important life skill.”
“We hope that these competitions will encourage more young people to eat well and to grow up with a love of good, healthy food and give them grounding in cooking skills.
The winner and runner-up will go on to take part in the regional final on Saturday 19th March 2011 at North Herts College, Hitchin, The national final, organised by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI), will take place on Saturday 30th April 2011 at Stratford-upon-Avon College, The Willows North, Alcester Road, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, CV37 9QR

Hello everyone
Rotary Young Chef
Rotary Young Chef will kick off at a local level in September when the schools are back and the plans for the RIBI Final are already well in progress. Artwork for fliers and posters is being produced and will be downloadable and some hardcopy will be available.
I am pleased to announce that Filippo Berio are fully supporting us again this year and through them we have also secured the support of Delicious magazine. They are going to offer additional promotion and this has started with an excellent article on their own website. Click the link below to view it. This will almost certainly come to the attention of teachers and parents and at a club level open up new opportunities for working with schools.

Please continue to spread the word. I’d like to thank our colleagues at Filippo Berio for their wonderful support and enthusiasm.
Big Society
You cannot have failed to hear about the Prime Ministers ideas on the Big Society and how it is hoping to train and enlist the young people of the UK to build a better society. I want you to know that Rotary Youth Opportunities have not been slow in responding via a press release to the major daily titles and letters positioning Rotary as a potential partner in the provision of leadership training and personal development opportunities for young people. RYLA, Interact, Young Citizen, Young technologist, the competitions all link into the needs that the PM sees as the growing needs of young people.
We’ll keep you posted. I know you will all be interested in this information, but if any of you have changed your district responsibilities and are no longer the DYO, then please let me know and provide the new officer details.
Yours in Rotary
Denis Spiller
