21/04/08: My name is Anne Frölich and I am a 1st year medical student at the University of Leipzig in Germany. Having had a teacher who is a Rotary member in Germany I know of the great earnings of Rotary and so I dare to ask you for help with the following request: During the first 2 years of medical school, German students are required to spend 90 days experiencing patient care from the perspective of the nursing staff, allowing for better understanding of the jobs required of members of the patient team. After spending the first 30 days in a German hospital it is now my express wish to learn more about medical education and health care systems in a foreign country, to experience other methods of hospital organisation and provision of medical care and to open my mind to another culture and way of living. Therefore I am asking you to help me finding a hospital in London offering me a 30 day work experience in August or September 2008. I would be very interested in immersing myself in the work done by the staff directly responsible for caring for the patient's needs. So the practical could also be considered as a practical in nursing. I would like to underline that I do not expect any money for my work and that I am prepared to pay all the expenses for my stay by myself. I am a very open-minded person and getting a placement in a London hospital would mean a great enrichment both to my occupational and to my private development. My English is fluent both spoken and written. Succeeding in the course “English for medical students” at University understanding and speaking the English medical language should be no problem for me as well. Please feel free to contact me if you require any further details or documents (e.g. curriclulum vitae, certificates for courses I passed). I thank you a lot for your efforts. Yours faithfully, Anne Frölich Contact: anne_froelich@freenet.de

2/05/08: My name is Liliany and I'm from Brazil. I was a Rotary Exchange Student in USA in 1999 and my dad has been in Rotary for more than 30 years (4560 district). I've been working for a Bank in Belo > Horizonte/Brazil for 5 years as a system analyst. I'm going to take some SAP courses in London next June and I would like to know if is there any Rotary Exchange Program I could fit in or some place that could host me or so. I think I would take some courses for about 20 days and those courses are already very expensive so it would help a lot if I find a place to stay or at least a cheaper place. Well, I hope you can help me. Thanks for your attention. Best Regards, Liliany. Contact: Liliany Couto lilianycouto@gmail.com

I address myself to you because I would love to do my clinical training as a senior medical student in one of London's hospitals. My name is Susanna Weidlinger. I have been a medical student at Vienna’s Medical University since October 2004. I contact you, because my father himself is a member of the rotary club Schaerding, District 1920 in Austria. Despite my excellent academic performance none of the already contacted hospitals has rewritten. In case one of your club's members is a doctor who works in a hospital I would be grateful if he helped me to get a traineeship there for four weeks in summer of 2008. The best time for me would be July. Of course I am also available in August and September. If there is a chance to be an assistant in one of London's hospitals for one month in summer, please let me know. The District Secretary has my curriculum vitae and the letter of recommendation. I promise I would do a good job if you gave me this chance. I hope to hear from you soon. My e-mail address is: n0442260@students.meduniwien.ac.at With best regards, Susanna Weidlinger Dr. Josef-Loescher-Weg 19 4770 Andorf Austria.

20/05/08: Dear Governor of the Rotary in London District, I am a member of Rotary Club Pisa Pacinotti, Pisa (Italy) and a University Professor of Telecommunications (teaching in both Pisa and Rome Universities). I'm planning to make a short visit to my Colleagues of Imperial College of London for some days at the end of June or the beginning of July, traveling to London together with my wife (medical doctor at Pisa University hospital) and our daughter. Since our daughter is 14, I wonder whether you know Rotarian members in London having a daughter as old as the mine (to possibly meet during our journey in London). Furthermore, if she likes, she could also be our guest at home in Pisa, Italy, for a period during school holidays. Sincerely yours, Gaetano Giunta E-mail address: giunta@ieee.org Prof. G. 28.02.08: My 19 year old daughter, Natalie, participated in a short-term exchange to Germany in 2005 and, of course, the travel bug has bitten. Owing to the fact that the South African Rand is not strong at the moment, it is very difficult for young South Africans to travel abroad. I was wondering if, perhaps, any of your members who have been involved with youth or student exchange in the past would be prepared to offer affordable accommodation for any period between now and May 09? Natalie is a presenter on a childrens television programme, and a make-up artist. She doesn’t smoke, and will have an occasional drink. We have been offered a box room in East Putney, but the thought of my child living in what, essentially, is a cupboard, worries me. I contacted our local Rotary club in Kempton Park, Gauteng, South Africa, to hear if they could perhaps put me in touch with someone in the London area who is involved with STEP (short term exchange programme) and was surprised to hear that the UK do not participate. This is a pity, as my younger daughter, Jonti (15) would have loved to do a STEP with a British child. I hope you will be able to put me in touch with someone who might be prepared to help. Sincerely, Carol Roos Contact: email: pickapar@mweb.co.za |

18/05/08. Dear Governor Colin Mathews, Subject: Humanitarian support.
My name is Uri Zeiger and I am D.G.N. for district 2490 (Israel) for 2009/10. I am a member of Rotary Club Maalot-Monfort.
Maalot is located 25kms from the Lebanese border in the north. I have been asked to help a young girl's mother in finding accommodation for two weeks in London area while the daughter is hospitalized for an eye operation. I enclose a letter describing the case. I hope that you may be able to find Rotarians in your district who will be kind to either accommodate the mother or find a place for her to stay that will not be too costly. Yours in Rotary, D.G.N. Uri Zeiger.
Humanitarian request from Israel: Sent to the District Governor:
There are very few medical institutions in the world where R.P is treated or where research is taking place to improve on treatment and thus being able to help these young patients. One such place is Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, England under the uspicies of Professor Anthony Moore. I have been in contact with the hospital, and Professor Moore has shown interest and agreed to see Shavit, for a consultation and hopefully will able to help her.
Shavit and her mother, Batya, are going to London on Wednesday 25/6 till Wed 10/7. Her consultation with Professor Moore is on Thursday 26/6. The hospital requested that they stay in the U.K for 14 days, in case there is further treatment or tests involved after the initial consultation. Below is a link to an article about the disease and the work at the hospital (in Hebrew): http://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340,L-3536693,00.html#n
Shavit has 3 siblings all of whom are in sound health. Her mother, Batya works for the Ma'alot Tarshicha Local Council as a secretary in a primary school. Her father, Shlomo, works as a hired worker.
The parents are obviously determined to do whatever it takes to help Shavit and hope to find the treatment suitable to slow down the onset and development of this condition.
At the moment they are having to finance the travel expenses (flight for Shavit and her mother to London) and the cost of being in London for 14 days as well as the very costly hospital fees.
We would like to know if you know of rooms with basic amenities available (shower) at a reasonable price in London where they can stay during their two weeks as hotel fees are very high in London, and especially
at this time of the year - the summer season. We would really appreciate any help in this field. You can contact Batya directly -Cellphone - 052 5420428 or at home 077 9249844. I really appreciate you willingness to try and help the family. I am sure you can understand the stress they are under and their determination to save their daughter's sight. Thanking you in advance. Beth Isaacs - (just a friend of the family) Beth & Dave Isaacs Kibbutz Tuval. Contact: Zeiger@012net.it
Dear Mr Zeiger, I am writing to you on behalf of Batya Hazan, the mother of Shavit Hazan aged 20 years old. At the age of 18 years old, Shavit was diagnosed with a rare degenerate disease of the eye called Retinal Dystrophy. It is a distortion of the retina and eventually can result in blindness. It is today the commonest cause of blindness in young people in the developed world. Patients with R.P have difficulty in negotiating dark or dimly lit environments. There sight during the day is limited and they have what is commonly described as "tunnel vision" i.e. they are no periphiral vision at all, even during the day. This is obviously worse at night when one's vision is naturally more limited. Patients also eventually loose the ability to distinguish colour variation. |

24/04/08: I am Eva Horanszky member of the Rotary 1911 District. I regularly visit England as my daughter lives there. I would like to come into contact with other Rotary Clubs there so maybe we could work together on some projects. As my work I am running a education network in North-East Hungary specialised in languages. As the member of Rotary I am the one who is responsible for the exchange student program in the area at present and would like to offer my help to organise a gap year for a student in Hungary if there is any request in this subject.
Besides I would like to ask for some help based on the friendship within Rotary in case it is possible. If it is not I absolutely understand it. As I mentioned above my daughter lives in England at themoment after graduating last year as a graphic designer in Reading. She is very conscientious working full time at an international company in the packaging industry at the moment. They are very pleased with the work she is doing but unfortunately there are some issues with the job and they are not going to do any changes (working in abnormal shifts and very low salary) so she is looking for her next move in her career. She has got a portfolio, references and has been working at various places gaining a very large and complex work experience and looking for a job in the area of London as a junior graphic designer. I would like to ask if you or any member of your club know an opportunity she could go for and have the chance for an interview or a trial at a company I would very much appreciate you had a word with them about her. I apologise for the unusual request I am just very keen to help her but as I am living far from there and my acquaintances are mainly in Hungary I do not have the chance to do so. I would be very grateful in case you can help me. I look forward to hearing from you. Best Regards, Eva Horanszky. Contact: horanszky.eva@rotary.hu
