Only 2 weeks until the Rotary in London Dragon Boat Challenge!

We are organising a Dragon Boat race on Sunday 23rd September 2012 to enable Rotary Clubs and various Organisations to raise funds for their own chosen charities. It is also suitable as a team building activity or simply to try out a new sport with your friends. We also would like as many spectators as possible! The event will last from approx. 10am-4pm and includes several legs/rounds of racing. There will be food & drink (to buy or bring your own) and entertainment, especially for children.

The entry fee is £550 for a team.

Boat Crews are normally limited to 16 rowers and one drummer (not essential). If you are short of rowers and would like join another crew please let us know.

We will send a pack closer to the date giving more information about the race. Basically people arrive in the morning, sign in, there are several races 2 boats at a time, each race lasts only a few minutes. Then there are quarter finals, semi finals, finals…

Before the race, the team gets a practice run with an instructor.

The Dragon Boat Race Festival is a charity fundraiser that is organised by the Rotary Clubs of Tower Hamlets, Newham & Barkingside.

The location is Fairlop Waters, Forest Road, Barkingside, Essex, IG6 3HN. Telephone: 020 8500 9911 Website:

A fire rescue service for Asella, Ethiopia: come along to our International Evening 13th October

A fire engine for Ethiopia

The Rotary Club of Tower Hamlets is committed to provide a fire engine to the people of Asella in Ethiopia and to establish a fire service for the whole community. Recently the local school that was previously attended by one of the Club’s member’s was significantly damaged by fire – there is currently no fire service in Asella and the surrounding area.
To raise the necessary funds to supply the fire engine – and to support two charities with which the Club has a long-standing relationship, the local branch of the Salvation Army and the Breast Cancer Campaign – we will be holding a Dinner Dance on Saturday 13 October 2012 at the “S” Banqueting Centre, Walthamstow, E17 4JE starting at 19.15 and going on until late.

His Excellency the Ethiopian Ambassador will be present and guests will be entertained by a traditional Ethiopian Dance Troupe and witness the Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony.
An eleven item Dinner will be followed by a Disco and raffle. Soft drinks and a fully serviced bar will also be available.

Tickets can be bought online:
